The Weymouth & Portland Marine Litter Project is a Dorset-based environmental charity founded by local environmentalists Jane Fuhrmann and Dave Taylor. Its core mission goes beyond simple beach cleaning to address marine plastic pollution holistically—from its source to its end life.
The organisation works along the Jurassic Coast, covering areas including Weymouth Beach, Portland Harbour, Chesil Beach, and the Fleet Lagoon.
Key Operations & Initiatives Circular Recycling Focus: Unlike traditional beach cleans where waste goes to landfill or incineration, the project aims to recycle or reuse around 90% of the material collected. They process approximately 7 tonnes of marine litter and plastic waste every year.
"Create Memories NOT Litter" Campaign: A major seasonal initiative targeting beachgoers and tourists to reduce single-use plastic and tourist waste: Beach Toy Libraries: Toy boxes installed along Weymouth seafront where families can borrow and return beach toys instead of leaving broken or discarded plastic behind. Crabbing Line Recycling: Stations designed to collect, reuse, and recycle plastic crabbing gear left around Weymouth Harbour, while raising awareness about crab welfare. Refill Promotion: Campaigns advocating for free water refill points to reduce single-use plastic bottles.
Community Beach Cleans: Regular public picks and evening summer cleanups aimed at catching litter before high tides wash it into the ocean, especially after council collection hours.
Ghost Gear & Fishing Waste Retrieval: Collecting washed-up commercial and recreational fishing nets, lines, and maritime debris, then routing them into specialized recycling schemes.
Education & Engagement: Working with local councils, businesses, and schools to promote waste reduction and local marine conservation.
